International Travelers Are Urged by ZATCA to Declare Cash and Precious Metals

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority emphasized the significance of travelers arriving and departing to and from the Kingdom who are in possession of currencies or negotiable instruments to electronically declare before arriving at the port of entry or exit through the (ZATCA) application for mobile devices, which is available through the (iOS) (Google Play) systems, by going to the declaration page on the authority's website (zatca.gov.sa) and filling out the appropriate form, or by visiting the declaration offices located in Customs ports upon arrival or departure.

ZATCA clarified that the declaration process is obligatory for every traveler carrying cash worth SAR 60,000 or more or its equivalent in other currencies, and every passenger carrying any negotiable instrument, gold bullions, precious metals, gemstone or jewelry, whether new, used or worn, and their value reaches SAR 60,000 or more or its equivalent in foreign currencies, stressing that proof of legality must be submitted.

The Authority stated that failure to declare or incorrectly declaring subject the violator to a fine of 25% of the value of the seizures upon the first violation and 50% of its value upon repetition, if there is no suspicion that the seizures are linked to a predicate offence or a money laundering, and in the event that the seizures are suspected of being linked to a predicate offence or a money laundering, the full amount is seized and the violator is referred to the Public Prosecution, stressing that this comes based on the Article 23 of the Anti-money laundering Law.
